OVERVIEW
A full history can be found here.

A QUICK SUMMARY: In 19 BBY, Cal Kestis was a padawan during the end of the Great Republic, stationed on a Republic cruiser with his Master, General Jaro Tapal. Cal was on this ship when Emperor Palpatine activated Order 66, a secret clone-protocol which defined Jedi as traitors to the Galactic Federation and, therefore, subject to execution by the Army. During the on-going massacre on the ship, Cal damages his connection to the Force and loses his own lightsaber. Due to his Master's sacrifice Cal survives the massacre that occurs and escapes from the ship in an escape-pod with Tapal's lightsaber as a last connection to his Master.

Cal spends his time in hiding working as a rigger and member of the Scrapper's Guild on the junkyard planet of Bracca. Five years later, in 14BY, he's found by the Inquisitors executing the Jedi Purge. At this time, Second Sister makes it her personal mission to kill him. Cal is saved by Cere Junda, a former Jedi Master, and the crew of the Mantis. Cere has chosen to not use the Force anymore, due to reasons she hides, but needs a Force user to help her unlock a holocron which contains the names of Force-sensitive children across the galaxy. Cere wants to use it to re-build the Jedi Order.

After a journey across the galaxy where they manage to stop development of many of the Empire's outposts, Cal ends up acquiring the holocron. He keeps it from falling into the hands of the Inquisitorius but, despite Cere's protests, destroys it to keep the fate of the Force-sensitive children to the Force and to prevent them from being hunted by the Empire and Darth Vader.

In 14 BBY, Cal's crew have split up and he's spent the last five years fighting the Empire. He's been working with Saw Gerrera and helping his insurgency, only to learn that there's little progress made and the Empire's reach is still growing. Cal reconnects with his old crew in a journey to find a place that's a safe haven for Force Sensitives and a home for his found family. The journey continues with him searching for purpose beyond avenging the Jedi Order and living in the past...

⇑ have hope. Cal carries hope with him. He's survived the Purge; has ensured that the Force-sensitive children are safe from Darth Vader a little longer. He knows he can make a difference. Now he will do what he can to help those in need, fellow survivors and those out there who are under the Empire's control all while he has a target painted by Vader on his back. Cal plans to continue to attack Empire outposts and put himself into danger, something that seems to put him at odds with his friends and crew as they continue their journey.

In the end, though, it's him paying all that Master Tapal did for him by sacrificing his life. He's seen visions of what could have happened to him, that if not for his Master's actions, he could have become an Inquisitor. He's the lucky one that survived; he has to do something.

⇑ do right by others. As a (newly minted) Jedi Knight, Cal wants to help people. He's not rushing to rebuild the Jedi Order but he's here to help people in the galaxy that he comes across -- be it captured Wookies, friends who sell him out to pay for his gambling problem, or those trying to kill him. Cal's got a soft spot for people who can be saved; he'll try to do his best to help them, save them, and make sure they're able to stand on their own. For example, he helps the dark-side aligned Merrin, a Nightsister of Dothomir. Merrin wrongly believing it was the Jedi that slaughtered her family but with Cal's help uncovers that this was a lie told to her by a conman who was trying to learn the secrets to the Nightsister's magick.

⇑ trust your gut. Cal sticks to his own moral code, one that may not align with the teachings of his former Order. Despite being the Padawan of a very strict Jedi Master, he's learned that things aren't so simple and not so Dark and Light. Unlike survivors of his time that are better well-known (like Obi-Wan Kenobi), Cal doesn't have unbreakable ties to the morals of the Jedi Order. He doesn't hide, instead taking on the Empire and attacking several bases head on.

Along the way he learns that there are shades of grey and the rigidity of the Jedi Order doesn't help people who are being oppressed or in danger. The Jedi's Code isn't always the answer.

His moral code comes into play when Cal chooses to destroy the Holocron because he knows that it would only put the children in danger. This is expressly against Cere's wishes and prevents a new Jedi Order from being developed for a long time, but Cal values the lives of the children more than rebuilding the Jedi. He follows his own beliefs instead of what others tell him.

⇣ act first, think later. At least when it comes to saving people he cares about. When his friend was falling off the edge of a ship, Cal used the Force to save him despite knowing that with the Inquisitors the planet, he would be caught and killed as a Jedi for doing so. He's more grounded by the end of his journey, but that doesn't mean he won't jump head-first into an enemy base or into a crumbling cave if it means getting some needed information. If he gets stuck, well, isn't it all a team effort?

⇣ that sole survivor. Cal carries a lot of trauma from surviving Order 66; he suffers from PTSD. Memories he's suppressed for years can pop up at random times and due to unforeseen triggers. These episodes makes him wary of people despite being more grounded since he's reconnected to the Force. It can manifest as hiding, withdrawing from others and not springing into action when people are in danger. When Second Sister finds Cal's group of Scrappers on Bracca, she asks the Jedi hiding with them to come forward. Cal keeps his head down and his friend Prauf is the one to take a stand, getting killed in the process. He's working through his trauma but it's a long journey ahead and often he's trying to find balance within himself.

⇣ a loner at heart. Cal's not so good on the friends front. He wants to help people but he's been a loner out of necessity. During his five years on Bracca, he made one friend despite being hard-working and well-liked. Even that friend said he didn't know much about Cal at all. In truth, he's not good at opening himself up to people and letting himself be known. It's a survival mechanism he hasn't fully dropped yet and that shows in the fact his closest friend is a droid named BD-1.

ABILITIES
The Force. The Force is an energy that floats through everything, it is everything all at once and those sensitive to it can tap into its energy. For Cal this manifests as telekinesis, increased empathy, visions of the future and psychometry.

Cal possess the abilities of telekinesis (such as Force statis, pushing and pulling items toward him with the Force -- the pulling allows him to pull ropes close and pull off some Spider-Man like swinging!), psychometry (being able to touch an object and see strong memories associated to it), and a sense of empathy which allows him to sense the emotions of those around him. He also experiences Force Visions, precognitive glimpses of what could be but are not necessarily accurate.

Cal develops those powers that by the time he's 23, he's able to calm and control large animals to fight by his side, utilize Jedi mind tricks to control or confuse groups of enemies temporarily, and use the Force to be able to jump 20 feet (the furthest a normal human can jump with a running start is roughly 10 feet).

Force Stasis. Cal can freeze objects or people, or slow them down significantly. This is an ability that he doesn't have to relearn in the game so it comes naturally to him. He can affect massive machine structures as well as fairly large groups of people, with no overt tax on his ability to focus or move but only when he uses this in bursts of a few seconds at a time. Sustained use strains him.

Force Healing. While reliant on health packs in the game, Cal can slowly heal himself with the Force. He cannot heal others.

Psychometry. Cal is able to touch an object and sense strong emotions or memories associated with it. The memories are called Sense Echoes. The stronger the emotions, the stronger the echo. Sometimes Cal can pull up the memories at will, other times a touch will cause an involuntary echo. This is a rare gift amongst Force users, as called out by Cere Junda.

Jedi Knight. Cal Kestis was a Padawan under Jedi Master Jaro Tapal where he learned to fight with a lightsaber and use the Force in the ways of the Jedi. Later, he becomes a Jedi Knight under master Cere Junda and learns additional skills to fight with a dual handle lightsaber.

Sharp Shooter. Cal can shoot a blaster and yeild a light-saber at the same time.

Mechanic & Rigger. Cal's a decent mechanic due to his time working with the Scrapper's Guild on Bracca. He worked as a scrapper so can pull things apart, tinker with them and rebuild them due to picking up pretty decent mechanic's skills (he builds his own lightsaber). Due to working in tight spaces on old ships, he can fit through most tight spots and climb pretty much anything he can grip.

Droid Binary Language. Like many of his world, Cal can understand droid binary language and speak to droids like his companion BD-1.
